This exists to remind you that you are an ape. Most of the time, we work very hard to forget this— and end up hurting the apes around us. But it is important for apes to be gentle with other apes. They are doing the best apes can. Whatever circumstances we find ourselves in, we make our way in the only way we know.

Some apes spend their days pressing buttons for money. Other apes walk hours for a bucket of drinking water. No ape chooses their genes, their parents, or where they are born, and no matter what an ape amasses over their lifetime they have to give everything back at the end.

In the meantime, we are defined by our pretending. We pretend that we are important. We pretend that we are powerful. Most of all, we pretend that we are in control. This is what makes us funny apes.

You may think that this is all about taking apes down a peg. But you may also notice that the world is not made of pegs. In fact, pegs are problems and distractions of our own making. This is simply about who we are— and who we are related to. None of us have the answers, so let’s make sure that as many life forms as possible enjoy the ride.
